Report To: Director, Marketing and Retail Sales

POSITION OVERVIEW:

As a leader on the Lifoam R&D team, the Engineering Manager is responsible for directly managing the Innovation Engineering department including design engineering, thermal modeling, and physical testing and new product project management teams. This role is a strategic leader of engineering processes, documents, training, resource allocation, continuous improvement and innovation management. With a team that has grown year-over-year, this position manages a critical area of the Lifoam growth strategy. Under the leadership of the Innovation Engineering Manager, the team will develop new products and packaging solutions for customers in the retail, healthcare and biotech industries. They will also develop new core material innovations including insulation (such as advancements in polyurethane and vacuum insulation) and refrigerants (advanced phase change materials and substrates). The Innovation Engineering Manager will work closely with most cross-functional areas of the business such as Sales, Marketing, Sourcing and Operations to ensure projects within the NPD system are properly resourced and executed.

This position is based in our Center of Excellence in Belcamp, MD, but will involve occasional travel to Lifoam facilities or customers. This person will need excellent communication, collaboration and teamwork skills, customer relationship management expertise and solid experience with engineering project management.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the Lifoam Innovation EngineeringTeam, primarily located at the Belcamp facility and with 2-3 employees atremote locations

a. Lead team with weekly goals toensure projects and initiatives meet timelines

b. Ensure team is trained andcompetent in all engineering aspects required for their positions

c. Uphold strong engineeringpractices within team, such as DFMEA and DOE.

d. Manage Project Management teamto ensure they have all training and skills to complete CAD drawings,thermal testing, thermal modeling, and other engineering requirements fortheir role.

e. Develop team growth strategy andhiring plans that address resource constraints as well as skill gapswithin the organization.

f. Maintain clear, directaccountability for timeline attainment and budget management perobjectives set up front.

g. Create meaningful metrics tocommunicate status and progress of projects and testing

h. Conduct performance reviews andset annual goals

i. Create career development planswithin the engineering staff.

a. Identify and develop new areasof material or process innovations.

b. Promote experimentation withexisting or new technologies into our core product line.

c. Support product development teamin evaluating new sourced materials for capabilities and viability

d. Remain current on technologythrough research and training.

  1. Manage projectsdirectly, as required or needed by the organization.

  2. Lead continuousimprovement of our engineering processes and skills

  3. Support sales team and customerswith technical support

a. Attend sales and corporatestrategy meetings

b. Lead innovation review sessionsto include: ideation, project and schedule reviews.

c. Connect and review innovation initiativeswith other Engineering Managers within Newell.

d. Support customer visits andaudits to ensure a high-level of customer satisfaction

e. Work actively with sales toclose new business deals through engineering support.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Requires bachelor’s degree in anengineering discipline and proven experience in Engineering Management.

  • MBA or advanced degree isdesirable.

Experience/Knowledge

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in newproduct development engineering with a track record of advancement.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience inCold Chain Engineering or Thermal Engineering field.

  • Experience with stage and gateprocess and new product development.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineeringprocesses, GDP, thermodynamic principles, and DFM.

Preferred Experience/Qualifications:

  • Project ManagementProfessional certification. Program Management Professional preferred.

  • Experience withSolidworks

  • ISTA CTP and/orCPLP certifications are preferred

  • Experience withProject Management Software including MS Project or Clarizen.

  • Light codingexperience in Labview would be helpful, but not required.

  • Experience withSAP would be helpful, but not required.

  7. Strongcross-functional collaboration capabilities.

  8. Strong task anddetail orientation; sense of urgency in communication. Displays diplomacyin all interactions.

  9. Excellentcommunication skills, oral and written.Must also develop and deliver high-impact presentations at SeniorManagement level.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Combination of sitting/standing approximately 50/50 percent of worktime. Able to lift 30 lbs.

  • Must be able to travel up to 25 percent of work time.
